Rescue Me ID: 15-11-16-00163Emmett (male)

Golden Retriever Mix    Age: Puppy

Compatibility: Good w/ Most Dogs, Good w/ Most Cats, Good w/ Kids and Adults
Personality: High Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

My wife and I have raised some smaller breed dogs in our lifetime such as our cocker spaniel who passed last summer. But we had some friends whose pure golden retriever and pure German Shepherd had puppies last fall. And, so we took a chance on a larger breed dog even though we have young kids and a very small piece of property in a cul-de-sac neighborhood. We unfortunately think that we need to find Emmett a family who can take care of him better than we can. He is pretty high energy and he probably needs a home with a much larger yard and maybe with other dogs. He is fairly well trained- he will sit and lie down on command and he will ... (Read More)come on command and he can shake hands. The retriever in him makes him a bit mouthy, meaning that he wants to chew on something constantly or hold your hand or arms in his mouth, haha. I have been working with him a bunch on this. He has grown up with a cat and he and the cat wrestle and play together all the time, he is never aggressive, and the cat is as much the instigator if not more so. He is just too big for our two kids and too much energy for them and a little too rough with them bc they are small. It's nust his size, he is 80 pounds, my kids are 60 pounds and 30 pounds, 8 and 5 years old. He has never bitten anyone and he is not aggressive at all and gets along with almost all other dogs. He is unfortunately stuck in our house indoors 90 percent of the time and it is really not what he needs. And unfortunately we can't leave him out during the day when we go to work because he is very mouthy and he will destroy something if he is left alone long enough. We gave it a year, and we never thought we would be a family to give up an an animal, so it makes us feel terrible, however it probably is better for him to find some space and some family to really put some love into him. He is really pretty and I will load pictures soon, but he looks just like a yellow lab with a longer face, and he is super strong and fast. He has caught a bird or two mid flight and has grabbed at east one chipmunk that I know of. Call with any questions. Thanks. Also, he has gotten neutered recently, and he is up to date with all vaccines, plus a few extras due to us hiking a lot (vet recommended). (Less)

Originally bred for hunting, Goldens make wonderful family pets. Golden Retrievers are very sweet, patient, gentle, and excellent with children. Goldens are eager to please and respond very well to obedience training. Goldens make good watchdogs but are far too friendly with everyone, from strangers to other dogs, to be used as guard dogs.
