The story: My golden retriever on her first heat got pregnant by my mother's male dog which is a German Shepard/husky/lab Mix. All the puppies went to good homes and I told all the owners that if they ever needed to get a new home for them, I would take them back. Unfortunately, one of the couples had to give him back about a year later due to their house foreclosing. I decided to keep him (I was still living at home with my mom). I have now moved and there is a busy road that I wouldn't trust him by until we get a fence. So he has been staying with my mom. Just recently he went after my mom's cat and ended up killing her. I have ... (Read More)two cats at my new home and I can't put my cats in that danger and my mom still has a cat at her home. I need a person with great patience to train and take care of Diesel. The dog that has caused heart ache for me because I really want to keep him. He is neutered and about 3 years old. He will be up to date on vaccines before he goes to his New, Caring, willing to train, with no cats, home. If you have Any questions, please call. Thank you. Kelli (Less)

Rescue Me ID: 14-11-16-00017Chewy (male)

Golden Retriever    Age: Senior

Compatibility: Not Good with Other Dogs, Good with Kids and Adults
Personality: Average Energy, Average Temperament
Health: Neutered, Vaccinations Current

'Chewy' aka Chewbacca: has been a loyal family pet since a puppy; he is a healthy 10 yo dog. He loves people, but in recent years has become aggressive to other dogs. (He was neutered late at age 6?) The aggression seems to be specific to small dogs and he has fatally harmed 1. He is obedient with myself and spouse, but not so much with my kids or others (as in 'come' 'drop' etc.) We don't have any other pets and since the incident we have simply avoided interacting with other dogs. I am sure with the right 'pack leader' he would do well. He is trainable and truly has NO other behavior issues. I must be honest and admit that we cannot ... (Read More)adjust to his needs. Neither my husband or myself can be consistent enough to train him as much as we would like to. We both work full-time opposite schedules and I am at grad-school part-time. My 4 children are school-age and in various activities. He loves going for car rides, and when the weather allows - he comes along. BUT it's the variety of settings that would pose such a great risk, so I don't think we have the best environment anymore. I have been unsuccessful in surrendering him to other rescue groups due to his bite history (as disclosed it is with other dogs - not people). He was part of a first litter and I'm unable to surrender him back to the breeder b/c I cannot locate them (a prof from my college) (surrendering an animal back to the breeder seems weird anyways). Sadly, we have been unsuccessful with our precautions and he again attempted to attack a neighbors small white dog. He has been labeled 'dangerous' by my county. I must find him a new home in less than 30 days or euthanize him. I am not able to accommodate a 'dangerous' dog. A liability release would have to be signed if he is rescued. (Less)

PIease Read Before Adopting a Golden Retriever in Minnesota
Golden Retriever Dogs can make good pets in Minnesota if they match your IifestyIe. The Golden Retriever is a gundog that loves the water. Originally bred for hunting, Goldens make wonderful family pets. Golden Retrievers are very sweet, patient, gentle, and excellent with children. Goldens are eager to please and respond very well to obedience training. Goldens make good watchdogs but are far too friendly with everyone, from strangers to other dogs, to be used as guard dogs. Goldens need human companionship. They can get into trouble if neglected. This breed is suitable for homes with yards, and needs plenty of brisk daily exercise.
